Welcome to our weekly Friday Check-in for May 30th, 2025 ✅

If you are new to Soul Care, WELCOME!! We are so glad you are here. We have a weekly rhythm of checking in together on Fridays. We use Soul Care's Page, Person, Plan framework to create a weekly rhythm and prepare ourselves for Sabbath rest.

To begin, practice a few minutes of silence and stillness before moving through the three invitations below.

Let's begin with,

Page: An Invitation to Reflection

Today, read Luke 9:28-36 NRSVA three times:

About eight days after he had said this, Jesus took Peter, John, and James with him and went up a mountain to pray. While Jesus was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly, both Moses and Elijah were talking with him. They appeared in heavenly glory and were discussing Jesus’ approaching death and what he was about to fulfill in Jerusalem.

Peter and the men with him were sleeping soundly. When they woke up, they saw Jesus’ glory and the two men standing with him. As Moses and Elijah were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, “Teacher, it’s good that we’re here. Let’s put up three tents—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” Peter didn’t know what he was saying.
While he was saying this, a cloud overshadowed them. They were frightened as they went into the cloud. A voice came out of the cloud and said, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen. Listen to him!”

After the voice had spoken, they saw that Jesus was alone. The disciples said nothing, and for some time they told no one about what they had seen.
Spend a few minutes journaling in response to this passage:

  • What stands out to you most? Is there a particular word or phrase?
  • As you read through it a second time… ask God, “to what area of my life does that particular word or phrase connect?”
  • And as you read a third time, be asking God, “Is there an invitation for me?” Is there a response of some kind that God is inviting you into?

Next up is,
Person: An Invitation to Connection

Throughout the month of May, we are continuing to meditate on the theme "a life of service" and we're also reading John 13:1-17 alongside our weekly readings.

In today's passage, it says, "Peter didn’t know what he was saying."  Does that verse make you chuckle a little? Do you identify with Peter at all? Peter’s reaction on the mountain is so relatable.

It’s a very human moment: he’s overwhelmed, trying to do something in response to divine glory, but his words miss the mark. Who among us hasn’t fumbled for the right response in a moment of awe, fear, or confusion... and in front of others?

Some questions to reflect on:

  • When have I, like Peter, tried to “do something” in response to God’s presence instead of simply being present and listening?
  • How might I cultivate a posture of humility and attentiveness rather than hurried action?
  • How might that affect my interactions with others?
  • What does a life of service look like for me right now?
  • In what small, everyday ways can I reflect Christ’s love to others, especially when I feel unsure, unprepared, or unworthy?

Finally we have,
Plan: An Invitation to Intention

We are invited to a life of service, and not out of a need to say the perfect thing or to build something grand, but out of a posture of humble presence and obedience. Peter’s instinct to act, while misguided in the moment, speaks to a desire to honor what is holy. That desire, when shaped by love and guided by listening, becomes the heart of Christian service.

One way to be intentional about this is practice listening first: Get in the habit of asking, “What do you need?” before jumping in to help or offer advice, whether it’s with a friend, co-worker, or family member. This teaches us to serve by listening first, not assuming, and honors the dignity of others.

Spend an additional minute in silence prayerfully reflecting on where in your daily life is God inviting you to serve, even if you don’t feel fully prepared or know exactly what to say or do. What simple step can you take this week to show up and serve with quiet faithfulness?

Closing prayer:

Lord, help me to listen, to trust, and to serve
even when I don't fully understand or know what to say.
Use my simple acts for Your glory. Amen.

Thanks for checking in today - Blessings!
