Silent Prayer Starter Guide

Experience the peace of being fully present with God.

Silent prayer is a wordless way of resting in the presence of God. No words. No performance. No striving. Just presence. This guide walks you through how to begin, with no pressure and nothing to get right.

Five minutes is enough to start

Honest questions

The guide answers the three that come up most, because they come up for nearly everyone.

What if I get distracted the whole time?

You will. That is normal. The practice is returning.

What if I feel nothing?

You are trusting God to move at a level below words. That is where the real work often happens.

How long should I practice?

Start with what is possible. Even five minutes can create space for healing.

How to begin

1

Set the space

Find a quiet place, early morning often works best, and set a timer for 5, 10 or 20 minutes.

2

Choose a word

Ask what your deepest longing is today. Peace, Jesus, grace, wholeness. The word is not a mantra, it is a way to return when your mind drifts.

3

Sit in stillness

Thoughts will come. Gently return to your word and let your soul become still, like quiet water that could ripple at the breath of God.

4

Close with gratitude

Take one deep breath and whisper a simple thank you. Do not rush to make meaning, just notice how you feel.

A companion for the silence

The free Silent Prayer app holds the time for you: choose your word, set a length, and a gentle bell opens and closes the quiet.

What people are saying

Thank you for this reminder to slow down and listen. I am, by nature, so very task oriented, a Martha who wants to be like Mary. I am learning to sit at His feet.
